As I sat in the rafters of the Olympic Velodrome yesterday, cheering Chris Hoy to victory in the Track Cycling World Cup sprint race (above), it was impossible not to get caught up in the electric atmosphere. And after months of anticipation seeing the venues in the Olympic Park in Stratford gradually develop, it was just as exciting to simply be inside the iconic building, experiencing first hand what it will be like in a few months time.

That was the challenge put to Mark Champkins, who is doing a spell as inventor in residence at the Science Museum in London. To celebrate the opening of an exhibition about Hawking's life and work and to mark the scientist's 70th birthday, Champkins designed the Black Hole Light, whose spiraling hand-blown fluorescent tubes represent the way light falls into a black hole (Hawking has been instrumental in furthering our understanding of black holes).

Jamie Hausman, idfx
Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate sculpture, known to most as The Bean, will beam a brand new light in Chicago's Millennium Park from 10-20 February.
Prior to this installment, visitors to the site admired their own reflections in the mirror-like structure, laughing at their distorted images with each curve. For this short time, evening attendees to the area will have a different sort of playground. A combination of lights and music will stream from 10 projectors mounted on four towers above the plaza to cast light sequences onto a 24-by-9 metre rectangle of pavement.

Mosaics: a centuries-old idea for a 21st century home
Mosaics have a timeless grace that transcends millennia - never mind centuries. The earliest examples of mosaics were discovered in what used to be ancient Mesopotamia, which have been dated back to the second half of the 3rd millennium BC. These used fragments of coloured stones, ivory and shells, and it was only in 1500 BC when glazed tiles - the most predominant modern material used in mosaics today - were introduced properly.
