Design Event North East took place for the sixth time this year, putting the region's design talent on a national platform. Comprising over 30 exhibitions, events, tours and talks throughout Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesborough, the festival drew thousands of visitors to its plethora of design goodies. One of the events, Design Event MART, was in its third year, featuring a range of new work from 22 designer-makers practicing in the North East... and here are some of our favourites.

Cohda exhibited edgy woven aesthetics with its experimental Binary Furniture Process designs (above). The project is supported by Newcastle University's Culture Lab, Sunderland University's Advance Manufacture Despartment and Amsterdam based FOC.

Ellen Thomas showed her Milk Series (above), a beautiful fusion of natural materials and technological detailing. The furniture is made in ash or stained oak with laser cut patterns on the underside, with the newest additions to the collection featuring 24k gold leaf on one leg of each stool.

Can't See The Wood For The Trees (above) is a project by Jawini, which uses a visual play on words to add subtle intricacy to a minimal and elegant piece of furniture. Using laser etching to imprint the image of birds and trees does this with crisp accuracy.

The Agranda Bench (above) by RASKL is a highly functional design concept backed up by real manufacturing quality. Reinforced with stainless steel and a support bar hidden within the slats of hardwood, it smoothly extends to almost double its length, proportionally spreading the weight. The company is part design consultancy, part manufacturing facility, developing and producing custom pieces of furniture and accessories.
