It's around this time of year that graduate design exhibitions flood the calendar, with the industry's emerging talent showing the fruits their hard work at degree shows around the country and events like New Designers and Free Range. Following idfx's recent series of features aimed at young designers, I went to visit one of the strongest establishments, the University of Brighton, on Friday and spotted more than a few ideas sure to launch new careers.

The course features an eclectic mix of beautiful craft pieces and ambitious product prototypes, with an intelligent understanding of materials and making processes. Emily Hall's vibrant Hybrid collection of vessels mixes two deeply traditional processes, basket weaving and ceramics, exploring the balance and contrast between the two different materials (top). Meanwhile Rosanna Kennedy's innovative Spring Rug, one of four pieces inspired by the seasons, features segments embedded with cress seeds that sprout when water is spilled on the floor (above).
Combining familiar domestic objects with themes of war, Tania Pillay's witty collection includes ceramic milk jugs with handles moulded on hand grenades (above). Her Soldier Homeware aims to tackle world issues within the everyday home routine.
Equally well executed are the concepts of Adi Chambers, including a set of drawers moulded on old drawer fronts, applying a range of industrial aesthetics to create a striking piece of furniture (below).

For its muted tones and sculptural forms, my favourite piece had to be Jórun Høgnesen's Steinar collection of seating. The 'boulders' are upholstered in knitted and felted wool from Høgnesen's home of the Faro islands, a material that can be used indoor and outdoors due to its water resistant properties (below).
The Burt, Brill and Cardens Graduate Show is on at the University of Brighton Grand Parade campus from 4 - 10 June 2010.
