In the spirit of idfx's intrepid have-a-go attitude (we've recently clocked up both chairmaking and glassblowing), I was dispatched to Devon last week to try out a Vi-Spring bed. 'Sounds like my kind of assignment," I thought."Go to a country house hotel, spend the night in an expensive hand-made bed and then head back to the office. I think I can handle that." But, true to the old saying, it turned out we were expected to both make the beds and then lie in them.

We toured the factory watching the impressive and rather arduous bed-making process. No hospital corners here, but something much more demanding, starting with making the springs, then sewing them together to form the structure followed by layering all the different fillings to make the finished mattress. Then a man with an incredibly long needle (and a rather mischievous smile) tried to persuade us to have a go at stitching. We were warned not to get any blood on the ticking and we all - beds and amateur bed-makers - managed to emerge unscathed. After all that, a blissful night's sleep was guaranteed. There will be a whole feature on the great British bed in the July issue of idfx - perfect bed-time reading!

I'd never really thought about the manual work that goes into making a mattress. It must be a pretty physical job doing that 8 hours a day 7 days a week.

You'd need a lie down after that :)
