Bodging Milano Revisited
May 6, 2010

By Jenny Brewer
For those of us who didn't make it to Milan, the lovely chaps at Designersblock showed the results of their Bodging Milano project again last night at the company's East London headquarters. The show featured one-off chairs designed and made in a workshop in the woods by a group of skilled designers including Gitta Gschwendtner and Gareth Neal (above).

In contrast to the self-proclaimed 'bodge', the hand-made chairs were testament to the group's high level of craftsmanship, who made the pieces using only the most basic of tools, traditional processes and no electricity. Working from Gudrun Leitz's outdoor workshop in Herefordshire, the group had six days to make the ten chairs, which were then shown in Milan last month. It was good to see the products (and the designers) had survived the show and lived to tell the tale.
The show also featured pieces by Amos Marchant, Carl Clerkin, Chris Eckersley, Dave Green, Suzanne Barnes, William Warren (above) and Designersblock's own Rory Dodd.

How nice to see simple processes producing such elegant and beautiful pieces of furniture. As wonderful it is to have modern pieces being produced with the most up-to-date technology, the whole idea of a taking the process back to the simplest level makes the final product that much more engaging and appealing... Can i have one? Wood turning in the Herefordshire countryside is suddenly feeling much more appealing than an office job in EC1.
