May 27, 2010

A variety of talent from young students to the commercially successful make up the list of selected artists for the 2010 British Class Biennale. The list of 96 glass pieces by 62 artists was chosen through an anonymous selection process out of 449 pieces entered. Even with the variety of art selected, there were a few types of pieces the judges and contributors had an eye for.
A significant amount of lighting was selected this time around, including this botanically inspired chandelier titled "Physalia" by James Lethbridge.

Contributing artists also favoured the glass making technique known as lampworking this year. This example titled "Folks" by Ayako Tani was inspired by memories of watching her grandmother knit.
Asnother key theme amongst successful exhibits was glass manipulated to create fabric-like structures. This piece, "A little bit of Lace" by Kathryn Wightman, strives to give a familiar object a fresh perspective.

These pieces along with the rest of those selected will be on display daily from 10am-5pm during the exhibition, which runs from 27 August to 11 September in The Ruskin Glass Centre. This year's winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 26 August. All work is for sale. Prices range from £85 to £11,000.
