It's a Colourful Life
May 28, 2010

By Jenny Brewer, idfx
Colour choice is one of the most important decisions on a project, yet many find it a difficult one to make, turning to trend forecasts for supposed certainty in an endless spectrum. For the June of idfx we spoke to industry experts known for their confidence with colour, to see what they really think of these trend predictions, how they approach colour and what tones they are drawn to at the moment. This included Sue Timney, an interior designer known for her bold use of colour and monochrome.
'I do not use trend forecasting as I prefer to feel my way with
colour on a project. I view colour selection as being part of my job.'
Selamat Datang from Chelsea!
May 27, 2010
By Rebecca Hoh, assistant editor at idfx
If I had to put together a list of the top 10 people I wanted to meet in my life, I'm not ashamed to say garden designer, ethno-botanist and presenter of TV show Grow Your Own Drugs James Wong would definitely be on there. I do love flowers but it's also the fact we both have Malaysian-Chinese fathers, British mothers and both hold the flora and fauna of Malaysia close to our hearts. So much so that Wong and his design partner David Cubero at their company Amphibian Design created the Tourism Malaysia Garden at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show and I could not wait to see it!

Architectural Association presents Seed 2 Scene
May 24, 2010

Times couldn't be much tougher for those trying to forge a career in the creative industries, but help is at hand in the form of a project run by the Architectural Association's Interprofessional Studio (AAIS). The event, called Seed 2 Scene, which takes place until 31 May, involves participants of AAIS taking over a disused building in London's Covent Garden for a free two-week festival aimed at bringing together creative practitioners and entrepreneurs.
Turbine Towers
May 21, 2010
by Jenny Brewer, idfx
Strata SE1, now the largest residential tower in central London, was officially launched this week, with an exhibition at the Building Centre in Central London. At 148 metres, the bold new landmark in Elephant and Castle has more than just height to make it stand out on the skyline. It is the first major building in the world with integral wind-turbines, which will generate at least 8 percent of the energy needed to power the properties inside.
School's Out - BarberOsgerby's journey from graduation to design success
May 20, 2010
In our up coming June issue we have the final installment of Jenny Brewer's features on life after university for today's design graduates. I met with the Ed and Jay from BarberOsgerby to interview them for our Profile section, which will also appear in the June issue, and they had plenty to say on the subject.
Spring Fever
May 19, 2010
By Kate Burnett, idfx
In the spirit of idfx's intrepid have-a-go attitude (we've recently clocked up both chairmaking and glassblowing), I was dispatched to Devon last week to try out a Vi-Spring bed. 'Sounds like my kind of assignment," I thought."Go to a country house hotel, spend the night in an expensive hand-made bed and then head back to the office. I think I can handle that." But, true to the old saying, it turned out we were expected to both make the beds and then lie in them.
Collect 2010
May 14, 2010
Collect, the leading exhibition
for contemporary craft, opened today at the Saatchi Gallery. A
stunning collection of sculpture, decorative objects, jewellery and furniture
fill the galleries, with influential exhibitors from all around the world. The
event, presented by the Crafts Council, is a showcase of established names and
upcoming talent from the designer-maker industry. Gareth Neal's tables stood
out of the crowd at the Contemporary Applied Arts stand for their striking
hidden forms.
A Day in the Life of an Ercol chairmaker

I can safely say that I made a design
classic this week, with a bit of help from Ercol. It celebrates its 90th
anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion I visited the factory to
learn how to make the famous Evergreen chair, a piece that has used mostly the
same production techniques since its launch in the 1970s, and is still going
strong.
New Horizons
May 11, 2010

New Designers celebrates its 25th Anniversary this July, with around 3500 graduates exhibiting their wares at the Business Design Centre, hoping to make a strong first impression on the design industry. Isobel Dennis, who has been director of the event for six years, can explain why it is the leading show for emerging design talent. 'Over the years the format has not changed much, but every year the content is always fresh and dramatically different,' she says.
What London needs from good design
Architect Will Alsop
I joined a packed room of designers, architects and developers at property marketing company TTA Group's Mayfair offices this morning to hear architect Will Alsop, Chairman of the Society of British Interior Design Vanessa Brady, and property columnist for the Evening Standard Peter Bill give their views on what London needs from good design.

We have every right to be proud of our design industry in the UK, but we could learn a lot from Italy when it comes to the relationship between design and manufacturing. That's one of the subjects of a series of talks called Made in Italy: the Influence of Italian Design, which began this week at the Design Museum in London.
Bodging Milano Revisited
May 6, 2010

By Jenny Brewer
For those of us who didn't make it to Milan, the lovely chaps at Designersblock showed the results of their Bodging Milano project again last night at the company's East London headquarters. The show featured one-off chairs designed and made in a workshop in the woods by a group of skilled designers including Gitta Gschwendtner and Gareth Neal (above).
