Back in 1860, Arthur Sanderson probably had no idea his new business importing French wallpapers would grow into the fabric and furnishing company Sanderson is today. Or maybe he did.

A new exhibit at the Fashion and Textile Museum celebrates the 150th anniversary of Sanderson, and traces England's social history reflected through domestic furnishings and the changing social mores of society.

He took advantage of the building boom in 1880s Britain that led to greater demand for affordable wallpaper by expanding his range of machine-printed papers. And during the company's history, it has amassed a vast collection of wallpapers and textiles representing the many changing faces and fads of interior decoration.

"Even those who think they know the Sanderson story will be surprised to find just how great the company's contribution was, not only in matters of design, but by being in the forefront of technological developments," says Mary Schoeser, textile writer and academic who curated the exhibition.

"They were even among the first, nearly a century ago, to produce booklets with colour plates illustrating their paints, papers and fabrics."
