For its new headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, Unilever chose to locate in the up-and-coming HafenCity development. This mixed-use project is based on the Elbe River, and architect Behnisch Architekten designed the building to resemble a cruise ship, like those that anchor nearby.
In addition to its quirky, modern design, Behnisch has made the most of sustainable architecture. With the glass and steel facade, an ipasol solar control glazing was specified to transmit lots of daylight and prevent excessive heat build-up from solar radiation.
In warm months, this glazing minimises air conditioning costs, and in cold months, it helps insulation the building and retain the warmth inside.
In order to protect the facade from the area's marine climate, it is covered by a single-layer, fully-transparent plastic cover. The space between the facades is ventilated, which supplies draught-free fresh air through open windows.
