Third "Copper and the Home" Design Competition
March 9, 2010

Lookout copper wiring and copper-bottomed pots and pans, there's a new trend in town. Over the past few years, copper has broken with its purely functional conventions and become an innovative material for home décor. Designer Tom Dixon created his eye-catching Void lights (shown below) using copper, brass and stainless steel, while Alfredo Haberli designed his breathtaking Mesa kitchen out of copper (shown above). To further encourage the use of copper in design, Copper Development Association has launched the "Copper and the Home" design competition.
This third instalment of the competition challenges applicants to design an object for the home that uses copper or its alloys (such as bronze) as a fundamental element of the piece. The competition is split into two categories: one open to fine arts, graphic arts, design and architecture students and another open to young professionals, designers and interior architects under 40.
The contest is open from now until 30 November 2010. The winners will be announced in early 2011, with the student winner receiving a €1500 prize, the second place professional receiving a €2500 prize and the first place professional receiving a €4000 prize. www.copperindesign.org
