See The Light
February 4, 2010

By Jenny Brewer, idfx
Yesterday I went along to a dazzling Earl's Court for the ARC Show, a showcase of the leading brands in architectural, retail and commercial lighting. The highlight of the show for me was the Kinetica stand, previewing the Kinetica Art Fair open today until Sunday 7th February. An enclosed black-walled space was filled with dynamic light sculptures including a series of rotating neon curves by Roger Vilder, a spinning red optical illusion from Tom Wilkinson called 'Lets Bounce' and a hypnotic new Wave sculpture by Paul Friedlander using his Chromastrobic light technique, featured in February's issue of idfx (page 93).
Many brands were unveiling new products, including statement pendants from Swedish brand Zero and beautiful new ceramic chandeliers from Italian company FDV. The Helios suspension lamp from B.lux caught my eye for its geometric cut-outs; designed by Manel Ybarguengoitia, the light is made from sheet wood cut from 60cm wide sheets. For a bit of sparkle, the Crystal chandeliers from Unlimited Light combine classic glamour with new technology. Using fibre optic strands means there is no need for a central bulb and offers a range of colour choices.
For a change of scenery, Birmingham City University's Trends 2010 exhibition showed the results of their collaborative project with UBM Live, Global Colour Research, Mix Publications and Tektura. Working with 120 design, textile and interior students, the companies reviewed future trend forecasts for the interiors industry with some interesting results, shown in an unusual three-dimensional display of hexagonal shapes. The swatches aimed to represent a breadth of flamboyant interior concepts using textile, product and surface finishes. Visit www.bcu.ac.uk business for more details.
