Ten architects, including some of the world's biggest names in design, have been invited to draw up plans for an extension to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Architects including Tony Fretton and Amanda Levete, are among creating concept designs for around 1,500sq m of extra gallery space, with a budget of around £28m.

A V&A spokesman said that it was "very committed" to the new project, which will more than double its existing 1,300sq m of exhibition space, and represented the start of a second phase of improvement and expansion at the V&A, which will take place over the next decade.

The design studio's will be submitted at the beginning of May and will be exhibited at the V&A's Studio Gallery from June 21 to September 17.
