German design agency Dan Pearlman completed this holistic, sea-faring design scheme for the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Evangelisches Konigin Elisabeth Krankenhaus Hospital in Berlin.

Called "The Elise Island" project, the concept is based on a story told to children upon their arrival at the hospital:

Princess Elise invented her own island as a place to rest and feel safe. When she grew up, she dedicated the island to the patients in the hospital.

The agency worked with the hospital's doctors and psychiatrists to create a design concept that plays a central role in this story. There are three units developed with a different age group in mind: The sandcastle area for 3- to 5-year-olds, the palm hut for 7- to 13-year-olds and a Klipper ship area for teens.

The reponse has been positive, according to the hospital's doctors and psychiatrists. Patients are calmer and more sensitive, and the level of aggression among adolescents has significantly decreased.
