Le Meridien Parkhotel, Frankfurt
Established in Hamburg in 1984, JOI-Design believes that design is the hotelier’s best marketing tool. Therefore, it is no surprise that the company (one of Europe’s most respected hotel interior design firms) has recently won two prestigious 2009 Awards for Design Excellence (ADEX) from Design Journal magazine. Peter Joehnk, founder and managing director of JOI-Design, explained that the practice entered the competition with the aim of expanding its reputation into the US and the UK markets while providing Americans exposure to the design styles popular in continental Europe.

Le Meridien Parkhotel, Frankfurt
The design of Le Meridien Parkhotel, Frankfurt, was awarded a Platinum ADEX award for JOI-Design’s seamless blending of modern design with historical references. In homage to the building’s early twentieth-century origins, Art Nouveau furniture styles and textile patterns are intertwined with contemporary colours and twenty-first century technological features that speak to the needs of the wired guest. For instance, the conference area features rich, ivory-toned leather wall panels that fold out to be as easily adapted for laptop usage as for a sharing a coffee or taking notes during a presentation.

The Moevenpick Hotel, Munich Airport
Their design of the Moevenpick Hotel at Munich Airport received a Silver ADEX award for the fresh, spirited style of its business level guestrooms. The design firm developed a concept entitled “Outside In”, alluding to the natural world and providing a revitalising escape for harried travellers from the stressful, man-made environment of the airport. The natural feel is expressed through a palette of apple greens, soft fabrics and pattern while rich, textural fibres and timber tones add structure and warmth.
