Walking around Euroluce this week has been both a flashy and futuristic experience. I always love the lighting show in Milan - the dark hangars make a suitably dramatic backdrop for the products, sometimes dazzling, sometimes subtle and ethereal.
Crystals are still in eye-watering evidence dangling from chandeliers and often gratuitously sprinkled across the most unlikely fittings. Glass chandeliers remain a popular trend that is probably peaking at this year’s event, particularly the large scale colourful pieces – it seems every new hotel bar has got one.
And then there are the recurring retro references that are sometimes so explicit as to be almost pastiche. For the more interesting pieces, seventies styling is added in a subtle way. The Yamagiwa products shown here have a slightly retro feel but thanks to the quality of the design, materials and manufacture will look very much at home in 21st century interiors. www.yamagiwa-lighting.com
