Bespoke embroidered wallpaper company Fromental were involved in a 40s inspired pop up tea room this week and I went along to see the Chinoiserie panels in action.
The current craze for vintage style hit Lambs Conduit Street, with the arrival of the Pop Up Time for Tearoom, set up by vintage stalwart Johnny Vercoutre. Tea and cakes are being served in a 40s setting this week and Vercoutre and his business partner Polly Betton chose Fromental to finish the walls with a new version of an 18th century pattern, in a gunpowder colourway.
The handmade pieces are created by artists in China, who spend 600 hours painting and stitching each of the panels. The team chose Fromental as Vercoutre believes that people are moving away from shiny, mass-produced, throw-away culture and harking back to a slower pace, with a fondness for good quality, well-made items that when cared for can last for many, many years. Fromental’s papers are definitely that.
You can see Fromental’s papers adorning the Pop Up Tea shops walls until the end of tomorrow. Or to see more of Johnny’s vintage styled interiors visit the Time for Teashop at 110 Shoreditch High Street.
