And the winner is....

Successful careers in this industry often (some would say too often) depend on lucky breaks, and if my experience last Monday is anything to go by it looks like Germany’s Roland Kreiter is in for a wonderful ride. He is the winner of the Philippe Starck & MGX Pure Creativity competition, set up by Mydeco.com.

The competition asked 3D Design students between 18-25 to create a practical object using 3D Modelling software. Philippe Starck himself chose the finalists, and they were invited to the MGX factory in Belgium, to discuss their designs with a Starck network designer and experiment with the technology there. Of course, there could only be one winner and that was Roland selected, again by Starck, for his Core2 Lemon Press design. IMG_9553[1].jpg

As well as winning 1000 Euros and the chance to have his design made by MGX, one part of the unbelievable prize was a trip to Paris to spend the day with Philippe at his studio and I went along too, in order to exclusively cover the story in next month’s issue. It was truly exciting and definitely a privilege to sit with this young designer at the start of what is almost certainly going to be a hugely successful career. The real ‘hairs on the back of the neck’ moment was when Starck decided to phone Alberto Alessi there and then, simply to say ‘Alberto, you should be making this.’ Roland was overwhelmed, to say the least, watching his career open up in front of him- achieving in one day something that designers strive for a lifetime to do. The icing on this already enormous fortuitous cake is a placement as an intern with Starck later on in the year. If that isn’t a lucky break, I don’t know what is.
