It is no secret to those poor souls, my friends and family, that I have a love for all things gothic. From the architecture, the clothes, the music, even the make up from time to time, it is a style I adore. Often it is a case of a style I bore people with (you have yet to hear my lecture on the superiority of The Cure to most popular artists today) but I think this unique and gothic approach to furniture will interest more than just me.

‘Wrapped’ is a collection of three objects by German designer Pierre Kracht. The chair, free standing lamp and light fitting have received critical acclaim at IMM Cologne 2009 after entering the d[3] contest and being chosen as one of the 30 collections to be exhibited. Will you be drawn to the dark side of furniture though?

The gloomy yet enticing style of the three items invites me to get closer to the design. Are they solid objects, as delicate as they appear, or merely shadows of an idea? The material used, a cocoon of thread, has an almost ethereal nature and appears to have been woven by a spider rather than man. There is an eerie feel to the furniture but they are delicate artistic pieces that feel like they have a story behind them.

The designer was inspired by memories fading with time and leaving just a shell as remains. I think this idea, however melancholy, has transferred beautifully into physical form. No question they are not going to be used to playfully brighten up a room, but their intense shadowy elegance would be a welcome artwork in my home anytime.

Well, perhaps when I shack up with Robert Smith in that Hungarian castle I ask for each birthday…
