The Cartel Club and Restaurant, Greece

This is the Cartel Club Restaurant in Larissa, Greece. I think it's probably one of the coolest places I have ever seen! Spread over a floor area of 1,200 m² and with a height of 20m, it has a capacity of over 3.000 people. It is a steel structure with a flooring of polished concrete, with a roof that opens in the summer and closes when it's cold. Dominating the space inside the club are two 17m long self illuminating glass bar counters which bathe the entire room in neon light. The counters coordinate with the two 7m long and 2m wide lounge bars which are on an upper level and reached via two stairways also made of glass. The exclusive venue was built in only two months, and understandably, the opening was a massive success.

The architect, Christina Zerva, explained: "Through the inner space appears a small provocative attempt, In the form of sculptures, silently protesting for a better life on our planet. Dedicated to ecological design, sustainability, clean air, clean water, salads without pesticides, apples with worms, world without violence and bloodshed. Objects hanging from the roof with chains remind us of the consumerist society we live in."

Raw concrete, acrylic glass and the white interior provides an exciting contrast. Recycled and second hand materials have been used for the building. For the insulation, cellulose rather than common building insulation materials (which may contain toxics) has been used. Also, photovoltaic solar panels provide sustainable electricity for the venue's use.

The entire Club is illuminated with LED modules which offer low energy consumption, zero ultra-violet and infra-red radiation, long life and extremely compact dimensions and better eco-credentials. The lighting designer on the project was Dimitris Nasikas.

The club is spread across different levels. Two lounges provide an intimate setting, and located centrally between these two areas is the DJ booth. The extraordinary lighting options and the sound system has already attracted many top DJs to the club.

PRETTY UNIQUE.

It is precisely aimed at spatial simplicity and practical beauty.
It seems that sometimes it is very easy to solve architectural problems and find ever new solution for them in a creative freedom.
