AB Concept won the prestigious US-based Gold Key Award 2009 for Excellence in Hospitality Design in two of its eight categories - best Casual Dining venue for Hotel Jen's restaurant 'Jen Café' in Hong Kong and best Lobby/Entrance for Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Tainan, Taiwan. The 9th November 2009 ceremony marked the award's 29th year of celebrating the best in hotel interior design.

The size and scale of the lobby at the Shangri-La hotel required the designers to use materials that stay true to the glamour of the hotel brand, while using techniques that bring it down to a human scale. A feeling of warmth was created through the use of local woods such as oak, while rough, tactile textures nurture an atmosphere of comfort. To encourage guests to relax and enjoy the lobby, AB Concept made comfort a priority, designing Asian-inspired seating and lamps with a residential attitude, calling out to guests to sit and stay awhile.

In its approach to Jen Café, the hotel's only food and beverage outlet, AB Concept raised the energy levels with a few striking features that are in keeping with the pared down aesthetic and subtle oriental touches of the hotel. A backlit wall built of typical Chinese charcoal rings appears refreshingly contemporary, while reminding diners of a simple, traditional way of cooking.

The suspended sleek chrome lamps pour light dramatically over the combination of low stools and dark tables, while the turquoise accented screen plays with the concept of privacy and space allowing diners to see into the hotel hallway beyond.
