London-based artist Lubna Chowdhary caught my eye earlier this year with her whimsical style, created through traditional craft techniques with contemporary colour combinations and abstract motifs.

Chowdhary has unveiled new glaze palettes she has developed for her “cipher” collection of tiles. They are available in 10x10cm and 5x5cm sizes.

Her glazes are blended in her studio, and painted in multiple layers onto tiles of various dimensions and textures. Each tile is then taken through numerous firings, before it is placed in a “meticulously considered composition.”

You can see some of her work as specified by Conran & Partners at the Aqua Bar at the Park Hotel Delhi in India. The colour concept for the hotel draws its inspiration from the five primary elements in the Hindu science of Vastu Shastra – earth, air, fire, water and space.

Aqua Bar is situated on the hotel’s outdoor terrace overlooking the pool, which is finished in a blue mosaic. The colours of Chowdhary's tiles on the bar and back wall reflect the colours of the water in the pool and the bar’s surroundings: hardwood timber decking and plush vegetation.

Brushed stainless steel was used for the back of the bar and shelving, solid hardwood is on the top and front of the counter and ceiling and ‘Random Light’ by Bertjan Pot designed for Moooi was used above the bar.
